Mode of preparation for UGC NET: Online or Offline, which is better?

UGC NET Overview

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has been entrusted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) with the task of conducting UGC-NET, which is a Test to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for ‘Assistant Professor’ as well as ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor’ in Indian Universities and Colleges.

The UGC-NET is being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode w.e.f. December 2018 onwards.

Awarding of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/ or Eligibility for Assistant Professorship depends on the aggregate performance of the candidate in Paper-I and Paper-II of UGC-NET. The candidates qualifying only for Assistant Professorship are not eligible to be considered for the award of JRF. Candidates who qualify the eligibility test for Assistant Professorship are governed by the rules and regulations of the concerned Universities/Colleges/State Governments, as the case may be for recruitment of Assistant Professor.

UGC-NET is conducted twice every year (June & December). Due to the outbreak of COVID- 19 pandemic in 2020 & 2021, the cycles of UGC NET were merged and conducted together.

In order to regularize the UGC-NET examination cycle, the National Testing Agency (NTA), with the concurrence of UGC is conducting UGC NET December 2022 in the month of February & March 2023 in 83 subjects, at selected cities across the country.

Going a step further and to regularise the exam cycle, the NTA has released exam dates for the later half of the year and the exam will be held from 13th to 22nd June 2023.

As NTA gears up to conduct the exam in a proper manner, students also need to prepare themselves for the exam in a dedicated manner. The fundamental question that bothers any candidate looking to start preparation for the exam is whether he/she should go for online or offline coaching.

Our JRF team is the best in the business and almost all of them have already been selected as JRF. So, in your preparation journey we will be the best guide for you and our experienced team will prove to be a vital cog in your preparation journey.

Offline coaching:

Offline coaching is one of the best ways to prepare for UGC NET if you live in a big city where such centres are available. It provides a structured way in which you can prepare yourself. It is best for those who want to prepare from scratch and require guidance at every step. The benefits are that you will get a proper classroom environment, disciplined lifestyle and personalised guidance. The drawbacks are that you need to travel daily which is a big wastage of time as well as cannot tweak the study plan as per your personal requirements. Those who migrate from small cities and villages need to pay exorbitant amounts for boarding and lodging. A candidate may also become prone to health problems as he/she stays away from home and has to consume subpar food.

Online coaching:

Online coaching is the new buzz in town and has overtaken the coaching space by storm. It is one of the best ways to prepare for any exam but especially for exams like UGC NET as a candidate need not tweak his daily schedule much and continue to enrol in other monetary activities. It gives you an opportunity to prepare for an exam from the comfort of your home without the hassle of travelling long distances from home or short daily commutes. It also provides flexibility of timings, pace or learning levels and a candidate can tweak the study plan accordingly. Online coaching is the more affordable solution and is a boon for financially disadvantaged sections. The drawbacks include keeping the motivation for regular studies, keeping self discipline as well as finding the right mentor.

Which one to choose?

The right choice for a candidate depends on various factors such as location, financial position, educational background, motivation levels etc. Both of these options have advantages and disadvantages of their own and a candidate needs to decide based on these factors.
