The UGC NET 2024 exam is divided into two papers—Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both papers will be conducted in a single session, with a total duration of three hours. Candidates will face 150 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), with Paper 1 designed to test teaching and research aptitude and Paper 2 focusing on the candidate’s subject specialization. Importantly, the UGC NET exam does not include any negative marking, meaning candidates are not penalized for incorrect answers, which encourages them to attempt every question.

The UGC NET 2024 exam will be conducted in an online Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. The medium of instruction for the question papers will be available in both English and Hindi. Candidates must familiarize themselves with this format as it will assist in time management and the selection of questions. The total number of questions will be 150, with 50 questions in Paper 1 and 100 questions in Paper 2.

UGC NET Exam Pattern for Paper 1

Paper 1 of the UGC NET Exam is compulsory for every candidate who has applied. It consists of 10 Units. Candidates must try the questions and pass this paper in order to go on to paper 2, the next step of the UGC NET exams.

  • The questions will be objective in nature.
  • Each question will carry two marks.
  • Paper 1 will last one hour.
  • There is no negative marking for incorrect answer in paper 1.

UGC NET Exam Pattern for Paper 2

According to NTA’s most recent notice on the UGC NET paper 2, this paper will be determined by the topic that an individual selects from the 82 possible subjects while registering for the UGC NET examination. Moreover, candidates can appear only in their post-graduation subject related to paper 2 of UGC NET exam. If their post-graduation subject is not from one of these 82 subjects, they can opt for any related subject. But whatever the subject be, the UGC NET Exam Pattern does not change. Candidates must be well-read and knowledgeable about their subjects, since this will be the primary test of their understanding. The paper will be objective in nature.

  • Each question will carry two marks.
  • Duration of paper 2 will be 2 hours.
  • There will be no negative marking for incorrect answers in paper 2.

The UGC NET Written Exam is a computer based test that consists of objective-type questions, according to the UGC NET Exam Pattern.   • The paper 1 will assess the candidates in area such as teaching and research abilities. It will cover themes such as reasoning skills, understanding, general awareness, and divergent thinking.
  • Paper 2 will be based on the candidate's chosen subject (e.g., political science, philosophy, history, commerce, music, etc.).
  • Paper 1: 50 questions, 100 marks.
  • Paper 2 will contain 100 questions for 200 marks.
  • Each accurate answer will get 2 marks. There will be no negative marking.

UGC NET Paper 1 consists a total number of 50 questions and Paper 2 consists a total number of 100 questions.

The Exam Pattern of both the papers is different and the exam pattern of different subjects in paper 2 is usually same but can have some minor differences.

UGC NET consists two Papers, Paper 1 & Paper 2. Paper 1 is a general paper and Paper 2 is a subject specific paper. Paper 1 consists 50 MCQs meanwhile Paper 2 consists 100 MCQs.
