Central University of Himachal Pradesh PhD Eligibility Criteria 2026

Candidates applying for PhD admission must fulfil the prescribed academic qualifications.

Candidates with a 1-year/2-semester Master’s degree after a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree or a 2-year/4-semester Master’s degree after a 3-year Bachelor’s degree can be eligible with at least 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade.

Candidates with a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree can also be eligible with a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade. A 5% relaxation is available for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), Differently-Abled, EWS and other categories as per the applicable Commission decisions.

Candidates who have completed an M.Phil. with at least 55% marks are also eligible, subject to the other conditions mentioned in the notification. A 5% relaxation is applicable to the specified reserved categories.

National-Level Examination Eligibility

For the first stage of admission, candidates must have qualified one of the following:

• UGC/CSIR-JRF

• UGC/CSIR-NET

• UGC-NET qualified for PhD admission only

• GATE

• CEED

• Any other similar national-level examination recognised by the UGC or competent statutory authority

Central University of Himachal Pradesh PhD Selection Process 2026

The selection process is based on a 100-mark composite score, comprising:

• Test component – 70% weightage

• Interview/Viva-Voce – 30% weightage

Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET Category I (JRF) or hold a valid fellowship/scholarship under UGC-CSIR NET, GATE, CEED or an equivalent recognised national-level examination can appear directly for the interview and are awarded 70 marks for the test component.

Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET/CSIR-NET Categories II and III or hold a valid GATE, CEED or equivalent score receive test marks equivalent to 70% of their score in the respective national-level examination.

Candidates who qualified NET before the UGC notification dated 27 March 2024 will be awarded 50 marks, with the remaining 20 marks based on their Master’s percentage.

All eligible candidates must appear for the Interview/Viva-Voce, which carries 30% weightage in the final composite score. The interview is scheduled from 17 to 19 August 2026.
