It was a time of massive change in how people lived, worked, and prayed. It includes five different dynasties that ruled from the city of Delhi. These rulers brought new ideas about government, taxes, and building styles. After his death, his trusted slave <\/span><b>Qutubuddin Aibak<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took over. He founded the Mamluk or <\/span><b>Slave Dynasty in 1206 AD.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was the first major step in the <\/span><b>Political Developments\u00a0 The Delhi Sultanate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> history. Aibak was a brave and generous man known as <\/span><b>&#8220;Lakh Baksh&#8221; or the giver of lakhs.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He built the <\/span><b>Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and started the f<\/span><b>amous Qutub Mina<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Aibak died early in <\/span><b>1210 AD<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after falling from his horse while playing Polo. His son-in-law, Iltutmish, then took the throne. Many historians call Iltutmish the real founder of the Sultanate.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He saved the empire from Mongol invaders led by<\/span><b> Chenghiz Khan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He also introduced the <\/span><b>&#8220;Group of Forty&#8221; or <\/b><b><i>Turkan-i-Chahalgani<\/i><\/b><b> t<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o help him rule. Iltutmish created a new currency system with silver <\/span><b><i>Tanka<\/i><\/b><b> and copper <\/b><b><i>Jittal<\/i><\/b><b> coins.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Rise of Razia and Balban<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iltutmish chose his daughter, <\/span><b>Razia Sultan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to rule after him. She was the first woman to lead the Sultanate. She was brave but faced many revolts from Turkish nobles who did not want to follow a woman.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After her short reign, several weak rulers followed until <\/span><b>Balban rose to power<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Balban was a very strict ruler. He used a policy of &#8220;Blood and Iron&#8221; to keep order.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He made people perform <\/span><b><i>sijada<\/i><\/b><b> (prostration) and <\/b><b><i>paibos<\/i><\/b><b> (kissing the Sultan&#8217;s feet)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to show his high status.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Khalji\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Khalji dynasty began in <\/span><b>1290 AD when Jalaluddin Khalji t<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ook power. He was a mild ruler who started his <\/span><b>reign at age 70.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> However, his <\/span><b>nephew Alauddin Khalji <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was much more ambitious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alauddin killed his uncle and became the <\/span><b>Sultan in 1296 AD.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Under his rule, the <\/span><b>Political Developments\u00a0 The Delhi Sultanate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reached South India for the first time. He plundered Devagiri and conquered many kingdoms like <\/span><b>Gujarat, Chittor, and Malwa.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alauddin was a master of administration. He separated religion from politics. He fixed the prices of everything from grains to cattle. This made him one of the most powerful and feared Sultans in history.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Tughlaq Dynasty<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1320 AD, Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq f<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ounded the <\/span><b>Tughlaq dynasty.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> His son, Muhammad bin Tughlaq, became the next Sultan in 1325 AD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muhammad bin Tughlaq was a very learned man but his ideas were often too far ahead of his time. He tried to move the capital from Delhi to Daulatabad in the South. He wanted to control the whole country from a central point. However, the move was a disaster, and many people died on the way.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also tried to introduce <\/span><b>&#8220;token currency&#8221; using bronze coins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He wanted these coins to have the same value as silver ones. Unfortunately, people started making fake coins at home, and the system failed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He planned big military missions to places like Khurasan and the Himalayas, but these also caused huge financial losses. Despite these failures, he showed a great interest in improving agriculture.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>The Reign of Firuz Shah Tughlaq<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Muhammad, Firuz Shah Tughlaq took the throne in 1351 AD. He was a more peaceful ruler. He focused on building things rather than fighting wars. He built many canals to help farmers, including one from the Yamuna to the Sutlej.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He founded the city of <\/span><b>Hissar-i-Firoza. Firuz Shah<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also cared for the poor. He created departments like <\/span><b><i>Diwan-i-Khairat<\/i><\/b><b> for charity and <\/b><b><i>Diwan-i-Bandagan<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for slaves. However, he made the<\/span> <b><i>iqta<\/i><\/b><b> (land grant) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">system hereditary, which eventually weakened the Sultan\u2019s power.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>The Sayyid and Lodi Dynasties<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the Tughlaqs, the <\/span><b>Political Developments The Delhi Sultanate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> began to shrink. In 1398, a foreign invader named Timur attacked Delhi and destroyed much of it. He left Khizr Khan in charge of Multan, who then founded <\/span><b>the Sayyid Dynasty in 1414 AD.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Sayyid rulers were not very strong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They spent most of their time dealing with revolts in nearby areas. The last Sayyid ruler, Alam Shah, gave up his throne to <\/span><b>Bahlol Lodi in 1451 AD.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lodi Dynasty was the first to be led by Afghan rulers. Bahlol Lodi brought back some stability by defeating the Sultan of Jaunpur. His son, Sikandar Lodi, was the most successful Lodi king.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He expanded the empire into Bihar and Gwalior. He was also a poet who wrote in Persian. Sikandar Lodi signed treaties with other kingdoms and worked to improve the economy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>End of Sultanate<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last ruler of the Lodi family was Ibrahim Lodi. He was very strict and upset many of his senior commanders. One of his governors, Daulat Khan Lodi, invited Babur from Kabul to invade India. In 1526 AD, the First Battle of Panipat took place.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Even though Ibrahim Lodi had a much larger army, Babur defeated him. He was the chief judge and the supreme commander of the army. These people collected taxes and maintained an army for the Sultan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Over time, these roles changed, but the system remained the backbone of the government.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Delhi Sultanate Important Government Offices<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several departments handled different parts of the state. Rulers cleared forests to create more fertile land.
